You Can Go Home Again

Families—are a venerable Italian convention, and the Sturianos of Marsala and Palermo are no exception. Thus, when the invitation for a reunion arrived in America, Nicolo Sturiano (a.k.a. artist H. Hargrove) was quick to return his enthusiastic yes.

Hargrove and Debbie were welcomed to brother Mario Sturiano’s villa and greeted by his other siblings, Lina, Alfredo, and Claudio and their families. “As usual, we ate huge meals and spent hours catching up on each other’s lives,” says the artist. “But Debbie and I spent time by ourselves too.

We revisited Erice and wandered in and out of the streets of Marsala. Not much has changed since I grew up here, more years ago than I care to remember.”

 One of the couple’s stops was a restaurant in Marsala, where they enjoyed a light lunch and a glass of red wine. Meals are not rushed in Italy, and as the pair enjoyed their wine and reflected on their many blessings, an idea was born for another painting in the artist’s Italian series.
