The beauty of the Marsala’s salt fields is magnificently captured in this latest H. Hargrove Limited Edition giclee.

In the time of the Greeks and Romans, Marsala’s salt marshes were exploited for the extraction of salt from the Mediterranean Sea. Later, during medieval times, windmills were used to drain water from the salt ponds to the flatlands, where the long dry Sicilian summers evaporated the water and left the salt behind. (Some of those windmills, or their replacements, are still in operation today.) The allure of Marsala’s sea salt is its use in food preparation, especially seafood (for which the area is famous).
