THE PHRASE “BY POPULAR DEMAND” IS nowadays considered merely a marketing tool that has devolved into the realm of the cliché; but in this case, it is totally appropriate. Over a decade ago, at the request of many collectors, H. Hargrove was urged to publish a coffee table-sized book featuring not only his most popular works of art but also the story of his life—from his childhood in Italy to his ascendancy as one of America’s most-collected living artists.
Preparation and publication were not feasible at the time—and “it turned out to be a blessing,” says Hargrove. “Because had we gone to press then, we would not have had one giclée to include in the portfolio.”
Indeed, a Hargrove book without a giclée would be an incomplete book, akin to a plant that had roots, stems, and leaves, but no flower. And the flower is the plant’s crowning glory, just as the giclée is Hargrove’s.
With his reputation in the art world rooted in serigraphs, Hargrove began branching out by combining serigraphy with lithography, eventually moving on to pure lithography, which was state of the art in those earlier days. “Litho’s four-color process allowed me to insert more visual nuance
into my work, but matching the litho to the original to ensure proper color, shade, and tone required a Herculean effort. The giclée process ensure a reproduction indistinguishable from the original and it is what allowed me to truly blossom as a fine artist.”
